IJMB; Here is Everything You Need to Know About the IJMB Admission

IJMB in Nigeria and everything you should know about it as a student and equally as a non student or an aspiring student in Nigeria.

Interim Joint Matriculation Board, IJMB is one academic programme and in some centres (some Northern basic preliminary schools, do it for 18 months programme

Annually, a huge number of students endure through the disappointment of missing out on the tertiary institution of their choice. For a significant number of those students, that disappointment has little to do with their performance at the yearly Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) managed by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge A-Level, NAGCE are other alternatives for JAMB in Nigeria, but only few parents and students know of these other alternatives.

A candidate could pass the UTME and still not be admitted in a university. The most recent figures from JAMB show that over 1.6 million candidates write for the UTME. But just 30% are probably going to get admission to a university of their choice.

Relatively, the measurements for the number of candidates who are admitted to Universities through IJMB dwarves the JAMB admission details.

For example, of the about 30,000+ IJMB candidates yearly:

There is a 93% pass rate

81% successful admission rate to a university

75% of those admitted get the opportunity to pursue their first choice course.

The bay between students looking for admission in Nigerian tertiary institutions and the actual number admitted through the UTME would keep on increasing in the coming years.

Except if an alternative is discovered, a lot more candidates would continue to see their dreams of becoming an undergraduate aborted.

For a long time now, that option is IJMB and numerous students studying in universities today owe their luck to the extensive direction they got from IJMB.

What is Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB)?

The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) was established in 1976 by the Interim Common Services Agency of the old Northern Regional Government of Nigeria

IJMB at initiation had two fundamental functions: to give social services and education opportunities to people of the Northern region of the country. Presently however, it has developed to involve the entire nation giving the best pathway to university education in the nation.

Since the start, IJMB has been directed and coordinated by one of Nigeria’s premier tertiary universities, the Ahmadu Bello College Zaria. The program likewise has organizing bodies in different tertiary institutions around the nation.

To make it available to as many Nigerians as could be expected, there are certified IJMB centers across the nation of which IJMB is one of the principal.

IJMB Requirements

Awaiting O’level result is also acceptable

Qualification

The program is available to all Nigerians with the requisite ‘O’ Level qualifications. Candidates who are awaiting their ‘O’ Level result are qualified to apply for the program.

Courses/subjects categories

There are no limitations in the categories of subjects in IJMB. Science, Arts and Social Science students are qualified to apply as long as they met the qualification criteria.

Applicants who enlist for the program are required to choose three ‘A’ Level subjects for the IJMB examination.

These subjects, one of which must be the English Language, should be related to the candidate’s intended course of study in the university.

Candidates are then expected to receive lectures at their preferred study center to set them up for the exams.

That is why it is imperative for candidates to select the best study centres available to ensure they come out of the program with excellent results.

Duration of program

Normally, IJMB is a 9-months program. Lectures start among March and April and go through to the entire year. The exams normally starts at some point in January or the first week February the next year.

It is a three weeks exams with the results expected to be out before the end of April.

At IJMB, candidates are urged to start ahead of schedule as we think getting excellent results are directly linked to early preparation.

Hence, enlistment begins in November and ends in April of the next year. Lectures are scheduled to begin between March and April.

So it’s ideal to get the enlistment sorted out right on time so we would all be able to get down to getting ready for the exams without interruptions.

Why is IJMB important

It is now certain that the IJMB pathway is the best option in contrast to getting admission to Nigerian universities outside of the JAMB-organized UTME. With IJMB, applicants are set in a profoundly organized and serene condition to help them excel in the IJMB examination.

Aside from that, experiencing IJMB in a certified study center like IJMB guarantees that candidates are given a peep into how lectures and studies are done in a real university in Nigeria.

This is important as many new students think that it’s difficult to adapt to the university environment after secondary school where everything is arranged for the students.

Other reasons why IJMB is the best alternative include:

It is perceived by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as a program prompting an advanced level accreditation in the chosen subjects.

Successful candidates gain admission to the university via Direct Entry. That implies they get into 200 level, skipping the first year of university since the program is equivalent to the first year of university.

The IJMB ‘A’ level result is perceived far and wide as a legitimate ‘A’ Level certification.

In contrast to JAMB, successful candidates don’t need to repeat the examination. It is a lifetime certificate that would consistently stay valid to be used whenever.

Step by step instructions on how to use the Result to gain admission

It can be used to gain admission into the 200 level in any approved Nigerian University.

A candidate wishing to use the result to gain admission into the university must follow these steps:

  1. Visit the closest JAMB office to get the Direct Entry (DE) form. On the other hand, you can visit the JAMB website and click on the DE link to get to the necessary portal
  1. Fill the form on the website or the hardcopy you bought from the JAMB office.

Make sure the details you provided match your result.

  1. In the form, you have the option of choosing your preferred university (first option) and an alternate choice (second option). You are allowed to make up to six choices.

The course you picked would be directly identified with how well you act in the IJMB examination. That is the reason it is imperative to pick a quality study center.

A decent IJMB study center joined with hard work and diligent study would  ensure your IJMB result would get you any course you want.

Universities that accept IJMB Candidates

While filling out the Direct Entry form, make sure your choice of university accepts IJMB result for entry into 200 level.

All the universities in Northern Nigeria accept students with IJMB result. In the south, over 75% of the universities, whether federal, state or private, accept successful IJMB candidates into various courses in the respective universities.

However, even though the poll of Universities for IJMB candidates to choose from is wide, there are some universities that are considered the best vis-a-vis:

The number of admissions yearly

The number of courses on offer for candidates
